Do You Have a Designated Driver?
In support of the Department of Transport and Isle of Man Constabulary’s annual anti-drink drive campaign, Heron and Brearley brewery is helping to reduce the number of drink drivers on Manx roads by running a designated driver initiative.

The Designated Driver – or ‘Des’ – initiative has been highly successful in the UK in previous years and the Road Safety Unit, the Police and Heron and Brearley were keen to launch a similar campaign on the Island. All Heron and Brearley public houses will be offering a free Coca-Cola Zero for the designated driver when a round of three other drinks is ordered over the Christmas and New Year period.
Prowl Backs Tynwald's Pragmatic Langness Solution
Tynwald today rejected, by an overwhelming majority, the report of its Langness Delegation. It chose instead to support a Department of Transport inquiry into the existence of footpaths across the whole of the Langness peninsular, south of the car park.
Public Rights of Way Langness welcomes Tynwald's decision to enter into an evidence-based independent review to establish once and for all the status of the paths at Langness.
Rights of Way spokesperson, Ian Costain, said, 'I'm very grateful to the Delegation for the amount of work they put into their report. Unfortunately their conclusions, by their own admission, fell short of the mutually-agreeable solution for which we had all hoped. Through detailed debate Members were able to arrive at the best decision for everyone. The best solution in this case is to let the law decide the status of the Langness paths.'

Top 5 Manx Tweeters
-
I was looking at Twitter Grader to see who the Twitter Elite in the Isle of Man are and these are the top 5 at the moment:
When is Free not Free
A recent advertising campaign by Manx Telecom claims that you get 3000 text messages free or 6000 text messages free depending on which account you sign up to.
Or do you?
Apparently not according to the text below from their website.
* Free Texts http://tinyurl.com/653pxw
Free texts only apply when purchasing top-ups online or via 154. Free texts only apply when sending to other Manx Telecom mobiles. When available, they will be used first at anytime. If no free texts are available in an account normal text messaging charges will apply. Free texts cannot be used whilst roaming, normal roaming charges apply.
If you are going to give something than give it.
If not that do not say it is free.
Why?
Because you will build up expectation and than cause disappointment.
The Delegation on Langness Report will be debated in Tynwald this month
If the report is passed it will remove all traditional rights of access to Langness and close off more land - though it will create a new limited right of way on the peninsular, safeguarding around a 1/4 of the coastline below the car park.
We have excellent footpaths legislation on the Isle of Man - which could be used to resolve this issue in favour of greater access, not less. But instead of using it, Tynwald is considering creating a new Act of Parliament to avoid it altogether.
We believe many MHKs are currently planning to support the Delegation Report.
Now is the time to write to your MHK to show you care about this issue - PLEASE TAKE TEN MINUTES to write to them this weekend asking them to VOTE AGAINST THE DELEGATION REPORT.
It doesn't need to be a long letter - but MHKs need a reason to say 'no'.
Aer Arann Debut At London City On Isle Of Man Route
Irish regional airline Aer Arann will be a new airline at London City Airport when it commences scheduled air services from the Isle of Man on 19 January, 2009. The Dublin-based carrier will operate three times daily flights with its latest, 72-seat new-generation ATR72-500 aircraft, pending certification. The move restores one of the most important air services for the Island and gives a massive boost to the Isle of Man’s finance sector. “From the start of next year, regular flights will be available to London’s premier business airport, less than four miles from London’s commercial and financial heartland at Canary Wharf,” commented Isle of Man Airport Director Ann Reynolds.

Double Whammy Thursday
This Thursday (18th September 2008) there are going to be two events which may interest people working in and around IT. I’m attending both, so here’s you chance to badger me into buying you a drink. So, what’s going on?
- Isle of Man Social Media Club - Third Thursday of the month as always. We had a great time last month, so why don’t you join us for the latest news about what’s happening in the social media space, on blogs, in Twitter and around Facebook, just to mention a few places.
Doing business in the Isle of Man
I came across a great write-up in the FT today entitled: Doing Business in the Isle of Man. it’s an 8-page special report that takes a look at a number of different aspects of the Isle of Man, ranging from the recent turmoil in the Financial Markets, all the way to living and working on the Island. I think it’s a pretty positive piece and paints a great picture of the Isle of Man.
Isle of Man BCS Event: ManxWiki
Isle of Man BCS Event: ManxWiki -
The Isle of Man Section of the BCS are holding a talk next week on a local initiative to build a Wiki dedicated to the Isle of Man: ManxWiki. Here’s what the talk will be about. Here’s a bit more about ManxWiki: The beauty of ManxWiki is that if you find a page that is missing data that you already know about, YOU can easily add to the page for the benefit of others.
Wikis are information websites that allow any person to register as a user for the purpose of adding to the pages directly with their knowledge and experience on the specified subject. In the case of ManxWiki the subject is simply “The Isle of Man”, any aspect of local life that is deemed to be of value or interest for the benefit of others.
Isle Of Man Steam Packet Company Names It's New Recruit
The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has named its new vessel following a naming competition launched by the Chief Executive on his blog.
The new vessel will be called Manannan, reflecting the Company’s desire to focus on its Manx heritage and share in the mystique of Manannan, the Celtic God of the Sea and protector of the Isle of Man.
According to mythology and folklore Manannan had magical powers. His palace was on the summit of South Barrule in the Isle of Man, surrounded by mists he could create at will to shroud the Island in a protective cloak. It is said the Manx people would pay Manannan a rent of rushes for their land and he would use them to build a model boat and set it sailing on the water. His enemies would believe they could see a fleet of a hundred great wooden ships.

Right to Walk Along The Coast
There is a debate going on about the right to walk and privacy on the Isle of Man here: http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/Clarkson-condemned-over-allegedly-delayin...
Kind of reminds me of Madonna’s dispute with walkers.
I took a look at the article and it is quite clear that a number of people commenting there do not make use of the path going around Langness. They probably do not walk at all. For somebody to block land that does not belong to them is an offence. Clarkson is effectively blocking access to the beach. He brought the house but not the beach. It is now no longer possible to walk along the coast. If your neighbour was to claim common land on your street because of privacy what would you say? He is already the only resident at Langness. How much privacy does he want? If he wants more privacy maybe he should move to place where nobody visits. The lslands beauty is for everyone not just light house owners.
What do you think?

BCS (Isle of Man) Talk: Search Engine Optimisation
I’ve organised a talk for the Isle of Man Chapter of the BCS this week that will focus on search engine optimisation. We’re having dotPerformance come to speak to us a bit about the SEO in general and about the work they do for their clients. We took a different approach to this one by going out and asking our members what sort of questions they would like to see answered. Here are some questions we got back:
Tynwald should have more faith in its own law
Public Rights of Way, Langness, ( PRoWL ) deeply regrets Tynwald’s continued failure to resolve the Langness footpath issue. People who have used the paths around and across Langness for generations know that under Manx law these routes should have been made Public Rights of Way a long time ago.
Ian Costain, PRoWL spokesperson said, 'PRoWL was pleased to work with the delegation to find a possible solution. At the time we had confidence that Mr Cannan’s team was trying to find an acceptable way forward. We are nearing the end of 2008 and the delegation have failed to agree a way forward with the Langness landowners since the beginning of the year. PRoWL has been urging Tynwald to take action to implement its own footpath laws since summer 2006. Tynwald and the Manx people should find this further delay intolerable.'
Boston Limited sponsors annual STEP conference
The Isle of Man Branch of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners’ (STEP) Annual Conference for 2008 will take place at the Mount Murray Hotel on Thursday 16th October. The conference, which this year will be sponsored for the first time by Boston Limited, is a highlight of the profession’s calendar, and provides an important focus for advancement and insight for the Island's trust and corporate service providers.
Building on the success of previous years, STEP have organised influential speakers from across the spectrum of trust companies, solicitors and accountants from on-Island, the UK and Europe. Speakers currently include Edward Reed (Macfarlanes), Richard Hay (Stikeman Elliott), Chris Wagstaffe, Richard Cassell (Withers), John Melia (Dickinson Cruickshank), Nicholas de Poidevin and John Nugent (PKF).
Isle Of Man Air Cargo Link Returns
After an absence of more than two years, the Isle of Man will again have a scheduled daily cargo link with Liverpool. Janes Aviation has announced today that it will commence the morning arrival and evening departing flights to Liverpool from next Monday, 29th September.
The new Janes service will overcome a major problem that the Island has struggled with for two years – the ability to be able to offer an overnight service for cargo to and from the Island.
Flights will be able to deliver cargo to the Island first thing every weekday morning, departing from Liverpool at 07.00 and arriving at Isle of Man Airport at 07.35, so that Island companies can benefit from deliveries to their door at the start of the business day. The evening flight to Liverpool will consolidate consignments at the end of the day to depart from the Island at 18.20, arriving at Liverpool at 18.55.
Isle of Man Social Media Club - September 2008
Isle of Man Social Media Club - September 2008 - Another great meeting of the Isle of Man Social Media club today, following the one we had in August. The gathering seems to be growing as I was sitting at one end and there were so many people that I only had conversations with the people around me. So, apologies to people I didn’t really interact with much, but I’m sure a great time was had by all. The corner I was sitting in discussed a number of things including (but not limited to):
Itex (Isle of Man) talk on “Storage Problems”
Itex (Isle of Man) talk on “Storage Problems” - I’ve just found out that Itex are running another breakfast briefing talking about how the latest SAN solutions from Itex and HP can improve your system efficiency. I had already been to one of the breakfast briefings which was about Managing SQL Server Sprawl and it was a great talk and very educational. Here are the details on this one:
My Company and Other Animals
The animal sponsorship programme has only just been developed by the Trust as a way of engaging with corporate sponsors in a more meaningful relationship. The partnership with Fairbairn Private Bank will enable Durrell to educate people on the complexity of saving species and it demonstrates how business and Durrell can work together. Mark Powell, Commercial Director at Durrell, described the approach taken by the bank as 'inspiring’.
Sponsorship deals like this will enable Durrell to maintain the highest level of animal welfare. This includes specialist enclosures and environment, the correct insect and grub food supply, and help in the support and development of animal keepers. However, the objective of this particular sponsorship partnership is not simply to pay towards the upkeep of Dad and Gutless, but to develop an ongoing relationship, which gives support to the chosen species and its survival in the wild.
